About Us - Oceana Canada

WHAT WE DO

Oceana Canada is dedicated to protecting and restoring our oceans.

Our Mission

We are rebuilding ocean abundance and ensuring healthy, thriving oceans that sustain future generations, coastal communities, and ecosystems.

WHO WE ARE

Founded as an independent Canadian charity in 2015, we are part of the world’s largest advocacy group dedicated solely to ocean conservation.

Canada is home to world’s longest coastline and an ocean territory covering 70% of its land mass. This places a national and global responsibility on us to manage the oceans sustainably — ensuring a reliable source of food, jobs, and climate resilience. Since 2015, Oceana Canada has successfully:

  • Banned unnecessary single-use plastics.
  • Ended the shark fin trade.
  • Made rebuilding depleted fish populations the law.
  • Protected vital marine habitat and ecosystems essential to biodiversity and climate adaptation.

Our expert team works across the country with ocean advocates, academics, fishers, Indigenous Peoples, and policymakers to bring science-based solutions to life. Restoring ocean abundance in Canada strengthens coastal economies, supports sustainable fisheries, and safeguards marine ecosystems to protect our future.
