The Last 400: Strategies for Saving North Atlantic Right Whales in Canada

Twenty-eight North Atlantic right whale deaths were reported between 2017 and August 2019 – 20 of them in Canadian waters. North Atlantic right whales are among the most endangered species on the planet, and 2017 and 2019 have dealt catastrophic blows these animals could have done without. Given that only about 400 of them remain, the species is teetering on the brink of extinction.

Oceana Canada is calling on the Canadian government to put enhanced measures in place, including fisheries closures, mandatory ship speed restrictions and improved surveillance in waters where right whales may be present. If nothing changes, we could witness the extinction of this species.
