Cutest Marine Mammal Moms

Estimated reading time: 0 minutes

Mother’s Day is almost here, and while we are busy thinking about gifts and cards to thank the amazing women who helped raise us, we also wanted to give a shout out to some inspiring marine mammal moms.

Humpback whale

Moms swim close to their calves, often touching their fins. This is thought to be a gesture of affection.

Polar bear

Newborn polar bears are completely dependent on their mom. They are born blind, very small (less than 1 kg) and without much hair. Polar bear moms form strong bonds with their cubs, spending two years raising them.

Sea otter

Sea otter pups can’t swim at birth, so they are born with a coat that helps them float. Moms carry their floating pups on their stomach, where they also care for their young; feeding, grooming and teaching them.

Harbour seal

Harbour seals are generally thought to be a quiet species. They aren’t very vocal, except when it comes to a mom and her pup, who have lots to chat about.

Beluga whale

From the time they are born, baby belugas stick close to their moms. They are extremely dependent on them, nursing for over a year, until their teeth start to come in.
