Hanna Vatcher

Right Whale Campaigner

Oceana Staff

Originally from Ontario, Hanna grew up loving animals and was fascinated by the ocean and all the creatures that inhabit it. Coming from a lobster fishing background on her dad’s side, she would spend time on the Lower North Shore of Quebec as a little girl and never wanted to leave on vacations to the Maritimes.

Following that passion, Hanna moved to Nova Scotia to pursue her BSc in Marine Biology from Dalhousie University. She then moved abroad to Iceland to do her Masters in marine resource management, studying the impacts of whale watching activities on the behaviour of humpback whales in a subarctic community. After graduating, she returned to Nova Scotia to work on conservation of North Atlantic right whales and worked closely with fish harvesters throughout Atlantic Canada to mitigate entanglements using innovative “on-demand” fishing technology.

Hanna is thrilled to be working on the North Atlantic right whale campaign with Oceana Canada and to combine her knowledge and passion for conservation of whale species. Outside of work, Hanna enjoys travelling, coastal hikes and cuddles with her rabbit.
