Missed Opportunity for Needed Conversation on the Future of Capelin After Industry Pressure
Press Release Date: March 27, 2023
A capelin workshop scheduled to take place next week in Gander, Newfoundland and Labrador has been cancelled after pressure from some voices in the fishing industry.
The workshop, hosted by the Harris Centre and Oceana Canada, planned to open the dialogue on a long-term vision for capelin – a critically depleted population that is crucial for the culture, economy and ecosystem in Newfoundland and Labrador. The event was supported by a programming committee of diverse voices and open to public participation.
This is a missed opportunity for a conversation with community voices, including industry, about the future of the capelin population and its role in a dynamic and changing environment. Oceana Canada will continue to advocate for science-based decision making that focuses on rebuilding capelin to abundance.
