Why Reuse, Not Recycling, is How We Actually Fix Plastic Pollution

Curbside recycling made its Canadian debut in Kitchener, Ontario, in 1981. Since then, Canadians have been told recycling will solve plastic pollution. But the evidence tells a different story. Plastic recycling has failed to keep pace with the volume and complexity of plastic waste. Canadians throw away more than four million tonnes of plastic yearly. Half of that is made up of single-use plastic packaging. Canada recycles only 9%.
The fix is clear: reuse over recycling. Instead of using a product once and discarding it into the waste stream, reuse gives that product a second life. It can work at both local and large scales. Beer bottles, for example, are sold, returned to the store, then sent away to the manufacturer for cleaning, refilling, and restocking on the shelves. At major festivals in Montreal, organizers collect used cups, clean, sanitize and restock them for reuse at the next event. This circular approach prevents millions of single-use plastic items from going to landfill or incineration. Most “recycled” plastic is downcycled, not recycled. A single-use plastic water bottle rarely becomes another single-use water bottle.

Then it goes to landfill. Some major plastic companies burn plastic or melt it into fuel, calling the process “advanced” or “chemical” recycling. Data shows these processes often fail to break down plastics effectively, and that facilities create pollution in nearby communities.
The plastics industry promotes “chemical recycling” as a next-generation solution. It isn’t. These technologies create greenhouse gas emissions and toxic by-products, and can release carcinogens such as dioxins, while allowing plastic production to continue growing.
Plastic does not disappear. It accumulates and pollutes. Recycling helps manage the plastic already in circulation, but it cannot solve the crisis alone. Reducing single-use plastic production — and choosing reuse over recycling — is essential to ending plastic pollution.
